THE COUGH

The cough is a reflex mechanism to maintain the permeability of the respiratory tract, its purpose is to clean the traqueo -bronchial tree of strange particles, toxic substances and mucous secretions. It’s dry cough, irritating, contagious and epidemic, that happens mainly in the children (infantile cough) minor than 2 years. It’s a spasmodic, violent and suffocating, interrupted by prolonged and noisy inspirations. Is produced by the Bordetella pertussis bacterium. When the infected person sneezes or cough, expels small drops that contain the bacterium and that move through the air spreading the disease. The first symptoms, similar to the common flu, in general is developed approximately one week after the exhibition to the bacterium and the serious episodes of cough begin around 10 to 12 days later. In children, the ferine cough (convulsive cough) often finishes with a "stertor" that happens when the patient tries to take air. This stertor is strange in smaller patients of 6 months of age and in adults. The episodes of  ferine cough (convulsive cough) can produce vomit and always you should suspect the presence of ferine cough when vomit appears at the moment to cough. In the babies (infantile cough), the episodes of asphyxia are common. The infection generally last 6 weeks.

The ferine cough (convulsive cough)  affects people of any age. Before there were many vaccines, the disease was commonest in babies and children (infantile cough).
