ABUTA (Cissampelos Pareira) is a plant type grapevine, which is used extensively in the naturist medicine and in the traditional Amazonian, principally it’s used for the menstrual disorders in women. This plant has been studied, researched for more than 50 years, finding many active principles. The Abuta is also used extensively in the South American naturist medicine.
La Abuta caused many researches in Peru and abroad since 1960 for over 50 years, and all the results coincide with the properties attributed to the plant by the natives. For that reason, it’s been included in the North American alternative medicine, now the South American and North American naturists depend commonly on the Abuta as a natural remedy for woman’s diseases.
NUTRITIOUS INFORMATION
The Abuta is a grapevine brown blackish, similar to a vine or rope, which grows up with glabrous leaves pale green, of 10 – 15 cm of length, with berries similar to the grapes, yellowish, of 3 cm of length, dark and non edible. The grapevine has knotty and beautiful edges that are similar to a bristly band that is rolled up. The plant is hard and heavy.

GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION:
It’s found in the Amazonian basin, humid tropical weather in Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia and it’s cultivated by many people to embellish their gardens. It grows up in humid tropical weather, in the Amazonian plain between 100 and 500 meters over the sea’s level, mainly in acid, sandy or clay soil.
PROPERTIES:
The properties of the Abuta are scientifically investigated since 1960, with results highly favorable and only have been served to check the medicinal use of our ancestors. The properties investigated and studied are: antibacterian, anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, antimalarial, antioxidant, antispasmodic, diuretic, hypotensor (decreases the pressure), muscular relaxing, uterine relaxing.
Among the properties of Traditional Use are: Analgesic (relieves the pain), antispasmodic (Brazil), anti-hemorrhagic (reduces the bleeding), anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, cardiotonic, diaphoretic (promote the sweat), Diuretic (Brazil, Venezuela and Mexico), expectorant, febrifugal (decreases the fever), hepatoprotector (protector of the liver), tonic stimulant.
PHYTOCHEMICAL COURSE OF THE ABUTA:
The phytochemical course points out that the main components are the alkaloids, then the saponins, the flavones and the tannins. The alkaloids have the main active principles (chemical), tetrandine, berberine, cissampeline. The tetrandine has the property of being anti-inflammatory and reductor of fevers; the berberine is hypotensor, antimicotic and anti-bacterian, they use it for the treatment of the irregular beats of the heart, and cancer; the cissampeline which is a skeletal drug relaxing of the muscle (Ecuador). There are other active principles, many, but are of second importance or that really don’t know well its properties.
